The Rajasthan Royals (RR) took the field without the services of veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for their crucial league-stage encounter against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, May 17. Speaking at the toss, stand-in captain Riyan Parag explained that the management decided to bench Jadeja primarily to manage his workload ahead of the business end of the tournament. Uncapped player Ravi Singh was handed an opportunity, stepping into the playing XI as Jadeja's replacement.
Why did Ravindra Jadeja miss DC vs RR clash?
While Parag, who was making his own return to the starting lineup—stated during the toss that the team had made just a single adjustment to their combination, a look at the official team sheets revealed a breakdown in communication. In reality, the Royals' management had shaken up the squad significantly, making a total of three changes to their playing XI for the high-stakes match.
"Looks like a dry wicket, but then we’ve seen the past scores and the past results, chasing has been better, but then tends to slow down a bit as well. So I was a little confused, but happy to lose the toss. We’ve had some ups and downs in the last few games. I think we haven’t defended well. But today gives us another opportunity to do that and do it clinically. So we’ve another extra seamer and then we can hopefully defend it. Almost there (on figuring the best team). A few injuries here and there. I had to step out as well, so that's not been helping. But as far as today is concerned, there’s just one change. Jaddu bhai misses out because of his load management and all of that, and Ravi Singh debuts for us," he added.

Jadeja, who made a high-profile return to the Rajasthan Royals via a trade deal ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, has been a central figure for the franchise this season, featuring in all 11 of their previous matches. Throughout the ongoing campaign, the veteran all-rounder has made vital contributions with both bat and ball, accumulating 190 runs and chipping in with eight wickets before being rested.
RR's tough road to playoffs
Under the leadership of Riyan Parag, the Royals have put together a balanced campaign, registering six victories from their 11 outings to occupy the fifth position on the IPL points table. Holding 12 points with a net run rate of +0.082, the stakes are incredibly high for their encounter against the Delhi Capitals; a victory would allow them to leapfrog the Punjab Kings and reclaim a coveted spot in the top four. As the tournament enters its business end, Rajasthan's playoff roadmap is clear. To guarantee a spot in the top four, they require at least two victories from their final three league matches. Furthermore, if the team manages to trigger a perfect late-season run and win all three of their remaining games, they will put themselves in a prime position to secure a top-two finish and earn a crucial double-chance in the playoffs.
