According to Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni is a different beast when leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Since Ruturaj Gaikwad would not be able to play in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) due to a minor fracture to his elbow, Dhoni has been named captain of CSK. As a result, the wicketkeeper batsman will be making his first appearance as CSK captain since 2023. At a recent occasion, Ganguly also praised Dhoni's leadership and mentioned his amazing ability to strike huge sixes at the age of 43.

“MS Dhoni can still hit sixes, we saw that in the other game. Obviously, he's 43 years old, you don't expect to see the MS Dhoni that I saw in 2005, that's quite natural. But I think he's still got the power to clear and hit. And I saw him play the other day in Punjab and he did hit a few sixes. I think with all his experience, all what he's achieved, he understands the game as good as anybody and will do what is right for CSK,” Ganguly said at an event as quoted by PTI.

“If he has to play for CSK, he must be captain of CSK. Because MS Dhoni, the captain is a different beast,” he added.

Prior to the 2024 season, Dhoni resigned as captain of CSK, handing the reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The 28-year-old has not had a particularly noteworthy start to his time as captain, though, as CSK lost four of their first five games this season and missed out on the playoffs the previous season.

In his 19 games as Chennai's captain, Gaikwad has won eight of them while losing the other eleven. After leading his teams to 128 wins from 212 games, Dhoni returns as the most successful captain in IPL history. It is unclear if his Midas touch will be enough to turn around their campaign in the current season.
