Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar admitted that he was surprised to see Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi getting penalised for the second time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for his 'notebook celebration'. Rathi has been LSG's star spinner despite having Ravi Bishnoi in the side. But, he already has three demerit points and another would breach of the IPL Code of conduct may lead to suspension. So far, many have questioned the second fine on Rathi. Legendary Indian batter Gavaskar feels that he was rightly fined for the first time but the second time he should've have been punished by the the match referee.
"The first time he (Digvesh) did that was when he got the wicket of his Delhi teammate Priyansh Arya. He was rightly fined then because he ran right up to the batter who was leaving back for the dug out and did the notebook celebration standing bang next to him. However, the next time he did that he was nowhere near the batter and so it was a surprise that he was fined then. He wasn’t in the batter’s space or face and so shouldn’t have been fined," Gavaskar wrote in his columb on Mid-Day.
Rathi pulled out the 'notebook celebration' after dismissing his South Delhi Superstarz's teammate Priyansh Arya who opens for Punjab Kings (PBKS). He continued to celebrate in that fashion when he dismissed Mumbai Indians' (MI) Naman Dhir. After getting punished by the match referees, he celebrated by writing it on the ground instead of notebook celebration. He did after dismissing his idol, Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) Sunil Narine. He did not get fined after that celebration.
Gavaskar wants 'unique celebrations'
Meanwhile, Gavaskar wants Indian players to learn from Caribbean cricketers and stop copying their favourite footballers. Gujarat Titans' Mohammed Siraj copies Cristiano Ronaldo's 'Siuuu' celebration as well.
"Now of course, there’s coverage of the various football leagues all over the world and the cricketers are copying the celebration style of their favourite footballers. Only the Caribbean cricketers bring their own unique celebrations and that’s what the Indians should also look to do," wrote Gavaskar.
"Celebrating a wicket when it is a top batter or if the bowler has bowled a real beauty of a delivery is understandable, but if the bowler has been clobbered for couple of sixes and fours in the earlier few deliveries and then celebrates getting a wicket in a tournament where batters are always taking risks is laughable," he added.
Rathi's stats in debut IPL season
Rathi has claimed eight wickets so far from six games at an average of 23.12. His economy rate is an impressive 7.70 runs per over. He will be seen in action when LSG take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at home on April 14.
