Virat Kohli breaks ex-RCB teammate Chris Gayle's all-time T20 record, becomes fastest to 14,000 T20 runs

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opener Virat Kohli went on a record-breaking or extending spree on May 13 as he scored his ninth century of Indian Premier League (IPL) career. During his unbeaten 105, Kohli crossed the 14,000 run mark in T20 cricket, a rare feat. He took 409 innings to achieve the feat, becoming the quickest to complete 14,000 runs in the format (including T20Is, domestic T20s and franchise T20 cricket).

The previous record for fewest innings to 14,000 T20 runs belonged to Kohli's former teammate Chris Gayle. The former West Indies opener took 423 innings to complete 14,000 T20 runs.

Batters with 14,000-plus T20 runs

Kohli also became the sixth batter to complete 14,000 runs. Now, the 37-year-old has 14,027 runs at an average of 42.25 and strike rate of 135.55. His T20 career is studded with 10 centuries and 108 half-centuries.

Other batters with 14,000-plus T20 runs are -- Gayle (14,562 runs), Kieron Pollard (14,482 runs), Alex Hales (14,449 runs), David Warner (14,284 runs) and Jos Buttler (14,200 runs).

Kohli far ahead of rest of IPL batters

Kohli's feat is astonishing considering that the only franchise T20 cricket tournament he has played is the IPL. He has 9,145 runs from 279 IPL games at an average of 40.10, including nine tons and 66 fifties.

Kohli 3rd on list of most T20 centuries

Kohli also finds himself sharing the third spot with Warner on the list of batters with most centuries in T20 cricket. He went past Rilee Rossouw, Sahibzada Farhan, Quinton de Kock and Abhishek Sharma who had nine T20 centuries each to their name. He is now level with Warner with 10 T20 centuries. Babar Azam is in the second place with 13 tons. The top spot belongs to Gayle with 22 T20 centuries.

Kohli equals Buttler’s record

This was Kohli's third hundred in an IPL run chase. He equalled Buttler's feat. He also equalled Buttler's feat of multiple hundreds against two different IPL teams. Kohli has 2 centuries each against KKR and now-defunct Gujarat Lions. Buttler has two centuries against KKR and RCB.
