Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has shared insights into Jasprit Bumrah's uncharacteristic lean patch in IPL 2026, revealing that the team management and training staff have worked closely with the star pacer. Jayawardene emphasized that these collaborative efforts focused heavily on carefully managing the fast bowler's workload and adjusting his tactical role throughout a challenging season.
Bumrah has endured a surprisingly forgettable run in the tournament this year. Across 13 matches, the usually lethal MI speedster has managed to scalp just four wickets while maintaining an uncharacteristically high economy rate of 8.36.
Addressing the media at a pre-match press conference ahead of MI's clash against the Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, Jayawardene defended his premier bowler. He noted that given Bumrah's immense experience as a veteran campaigner, he has been fully invested and actively involved in all strategic discussions regarding how he is utilized on the field.
"It was a good conversation, and Bumrah is very experienced now. I think he knew as well, so it was a collective conversation with his training staff as well, like where do we push him, because of workload management as well and how much he could bowl in nets during preparation," Jayawardene said at the pre-match press conference.
We tried to tactically use him in pressure situations: Jayawarden on Bumrah
He explained that Mumbai Indians initially attempted to utilize Bumrah primarily in specific match situations to ease the pressure on him. However, the head coach acknowledged that being the team's spearhead naturally forces a bowler to shoulder heavy responsibilities during the game's most critical phases.
"Initially, we tried to tactically use him in situations so that he's not too under pressure, but being a lead bowler, he's always under pressure. But we used him in different ways this season, so that it doesn't give him a bit more freedom, but he understands that," he added.
Jayawardene also talked about Bumrah's positive attitude throughout the season, noting the pacer's constant willingness to experiment and make necessary adjustments within the bowling unit. The head coach shared that their discussions remained constructive, with Bumrah often coming back with a smile, acknowledging what worked, and eagerly suggesting new tactical approaches to try out on the field.
Reflecting on the broader season, the MI head coach emphasized that both the player and the management gained valuable insights from the experience, even if the on-field results did not always go their way. Jayawardene expressed complete confidence in the star bowler's work ethic, stating that there was absolutely no doubt about the immense effort Bumrah put in over the six to eight weeks of the tournament to get back to his standard.
"He comes back, smiles and says, of course it worked. Let's try something different. So it's been a good conversation," he further stated.
'I think we all learn from these kinds of seasons'
Reflecting on the broader season, the MI head coach said both the player and management learned from the experience, even though results did not always go in their favour.
"I think we all learn from these kinds of seasons and managing all that. But one thing is for sure, there's no doubt that he put in during these six or eight weeks to get back to where he should be," the former Sri Lanka captain continued.
Concluding on an optimistic note, the coach praised Bumrah's recent resurgence in form. He pointed out that the speedster's trademark pace and precise execution have visibly returned during the closing stages of the season, signaling a strong finish despite the earlier struggles.
"I mean, the last few games, he was top-notch. He was back again, bowling that 140 kmph mark, 142 kmph, and the Yorkers were nailing. So I can't take anything away from his work and what he puts on the field," he concluded.
The already knocked out MI will now face Rajasthan Royals in their last league match on May 23 at the Wankhede stadium.
