Rajasthan Royals (RR) openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wreaked havoc at Barsapara Cricket Stadium after rain delayed start of the clash against five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 6. While Jaiswal went on to score an unbeaten 77 in the 11 overs per side game, Sooryavanshi contributed with a 14-ball 39. The much-awaited battle between a seasoned bowler Jasprit Bumrah and young gun Sooryavanshi ended in the latter’s favour with him hitting a first-ball six. The shot even made Bumrah smile on the way back to his bowling mark. After RR’s comprehensive 27-run win, Jaiswal revealed what he said to his 15-year-old opening partner after the six.
"First ball, he hit him for a six, and I told him to just keep playing his shots," said Jaiswal.
How Sooryavanshi taking down Bumrah motivated Jaiswal
RR got off to a fiery start even before Bumrah came on to bowl. But Sooryavanshi hitting the in-form motivated Jaiswal to take down other bowlers as well.
"Of course, Bumrah bhai is one of the legends, so if he’s scoring against him, it’s amazing. It made us feel that other bowlers we can also take down,” said the 24-year-old.
"So it was quite good for him to go out and play his shots. That took the pressure off me, and then I could take on someone else. It was a good partnership, and we really enjoyed it."
Jaiswal on batting with Sooryavanshi
Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi put on an 80-run stand in just five overs. The teenager departed after hitting five sixes and a four in 14-ball 39. He said that the two enjoy batting with each other and always intend to get their team off to a good start.
“It's amazing to bat with Vaibhav. We both like to play our shots, so the way we're playing, we just keep passing positive messages to each other. I've been playing for the last few years, so I just wanted to play according to the situation and give the team the best start," he said.
Jaiswal was named ‘Player of the match’ for taking RR to a daunting total of 150/3 in 11 overs with his 32-ball 77, featuring 10 fours and four sixes.
