Trent Boult made a thunderous return to ODI cricket. Boult got the new ball talking against England in the overcast conditions at The Rose Bowl, Southampton on September 10. The left-arm Kiwi pacer reduced England to 8/3 within five overs in a rain-curtailed 34 overs per side game.

Boult started off with an economical over conceding just one run in the first over of the innings. In the next over, Jonny Bairstow played across and the leading edge went to the covers fielder. Mitchell Santner took a big leap and pulled off a one-handed stunner to dismiss Bairstow.

Joe Root played a dot ball and then got out trying to flick across the line. The ball shaped back into the stumps and Root was trapped in front of the stumps. Root got out for a two-ball duck. After bowling a wicket maiden, Boult bowled to Ben Stokes. In the fifth over, Stokes decided to dance down the ground and take the aerial route. He did not get the desired elevation and got caught at mid-off by Tim Southee.

Boult made his last ODI appearance against Australia on September 11, 2022. He took two wickets in his quota of 10 overs including four maidens.

In August last year, Boult opted out of the central contract offered by New Zealand Cricket (NZC). The 34-year-old later explained that the reason behind it was that he wanted to play in various T20 franchise leagues across the world and spend more time with his family.

“I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved in the Test arena. But I’ve got three young kids and I look at my career as a length of string. I feel like I’m at the later end of that piece of string," Boult was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz earlier this year.

With a sensational spell with the new ball against England in his 100th ODI, Boult has fired warning signals for teams across the world ahead of ODI World Cup 2023 in India. He will also be a big threat to India at HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala which offers assistance to fast bowlers.
