After picking up seven wickets in Bengal's Ranji Trophy opener against Uttarakhand, Mohammed Shami continued his brilliant form in the tournament in the second round against Gujarat. The veteran pacer picked up three wickets and played a vital role in Bengal bundling out the opposition for 167 runs in their first innings.
Earlier, Bengal had posted a decent first-inning total of 279 on the board thanks to half-centuries from Abishek Porel and Sumanta Gupta. Though it wasn't a huge total by any means, the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led side managed to take a lead of 112 runs thanks to a brilliant bowling display.
Shami rips apart opposing batters
Shami was the one to open the flood gates and got the wicket of opener Abhishek Rajan Desai for an 18-ball duck. He then got the wicket of Siddharth Desai for 19 runs. His final wicket of the innings came in the form of Priyajitsing Jadeja, who departed for a duck.
However, the top performer for Bengal in the bowling department turned out to be left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed. The 30-year-old, who featured for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, recorded figures of 6/34 and played a massive role in bowling out Gujarat for a low total.
Bengal take big lead
In reply, Bengal began their innings on a positive note with openers Sudip Kumar Gharami and Abhimanyu Easwaran forming a 55-run stand. Though they did end up losing wickets time-to-time, Anustup Majumdar's unbeaten 44 helped them in finishing Day 3 on 170/6. They currently have a lead of 282 runs and will be hoping to hand Gujarat a formidable target as the action resumes on Day 4.
Meanwhile, Shami has certainly began his Ranji Trophy campaign on a positive note. He has already racked up 10 scalps in three innings and will be hoping to continue this form in the coming matches. After the conclusion of their clash against Gujarat, Bengal will be taking on Tripura in the third round of the domestic tournament that will begin from November 1.
