The South African bowling attack completely took over on Day 3 of the Guwahati Test against India. Marco Jansen was undoubtedly the star performer and recorded figures of 6/48 while Simon Harmer also contributed well with three wickets as the hosts folded for just 201 runs. Despite taking a mammoth 288-run lead, the Proteas decided not to enforce follow-on.
It was an incredibly poor batting display from India as none of the players except for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar were able to cross the 30-run mark. Though the Men in Blue started on a positive note as openers Jaiswal and KL Rahul formed a robust partnership of 65 runs, their innings went completely on a downward spiral after Jaiswal's wicket fell for 58 runs. restricted them to 95/2.
India's batting totally collapses
Following the wicket, India would go on to suffer a batting collapse where they would end up losing six wickets in a space of just 27 runs, restricting them down to 122/7 at one stage. It was the 72-run stand between Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav that saved the hosts from total embarassment. However, Harmer broke the partnership by dismissing Sundar for 48 and India's last three wickets fell for only seven runs.
Jansen and Harmer took nine wickets between them and were totally dominant over the Indian batters, who crumbled under pressure at the Barsapara stadium. The middle-order disappointed the most as the likes of Dhruv Jurel, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy were only able to score 23 runs between them. With South Africa set to bat again, they have a fine chance of handing the hosts with a humongous target.
South Africa had posted a massive total
Meanwhile, the Proteas had earlier posted an enormous first-inning total of 489 on the board. There were multiple batters who played valiant cameos but Senuran Muthusamy and Jansen were undoubtedly the top performers with their scores of 109 and 93 respectively. For India, Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers, recording figures of 4/115 while the likes of Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah all chipped in with two scalps each.
