Shubman Gill shared his take on Indian pacers' workload management ahead of SA Tests

First Test between India and South Africa to begin from November 14

India captain Shubman Gill remarked that the team's pacers are very well aware that the Indian conditions are less demanding in comparison to that of Australia or England. Workload management has become quite a debated topic especially when it comes to seamers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who constantly play matches for the Men in Blue across the formats.

Bumrah's workload has been a well-debated topic

Notably, Bumrah was rested for two out of five Tests against England, but then played both the games against West Indies. He is also unlikely to be rested for the upcoming two-match series against South Africa, showing that the team management's narrative about his workload has shifted. Whewn asked about this, Gill stated that Bumrah knows how to properly manage his workload.

“When you play in places like England or Australia, the workload for fast bowlers is usually higher than it is in India. But our pacers have also learned to recognise the kind of spells they need to bowl here," Gill said in the pre-match press-conference.

“For example, if there’s reverse swing on offer, they’ll go full throttle for that phase. Bumrah also understands that the workload in Indian conditions isn’t as demanding, and he manages it accordingly," he added.

Gill on the importance of SA Tests

Gill further highlighted the importance of the two upcoming Tests against South Africa. He also pointed out that the Propteas are a strong side and are the reigning World Test Championship (WTC) winners for a reason.

“These two Test matches are very important (for India). To play the WTC final, we need to do well here. South Africa are a strong side – they’ve won the WTC – so it won’t be easy. We know there will be difficult moments, but as a team, we’ve shown that we can handle those situations well," Gill stated.

“They (South Africa) have drawn series in Pakistan. They are the world champions in Tests. The teams who do well in Asian conditions are always tough to face. But we are ready for the challenge," he further added.
