South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series against India with their 30-run victory at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This was the Proteas' first Test win in India for 15 years and it saw them extend their unbeaten streak under the leadership of Temba Bavuma. They have so far won 10 and drawn 1 Test under Bavuma's captaincy and have certainly become a force to be reckoned with in the longest format.
Earlier this year, South Africa won their first ICC trophy in over 20 years by defeating Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final and that win also came with Bavuma as captain. With the red-hot form that they are in as of current, it is safe to say that the team have a great chance of handing a Test series defeat to India.
Bavuma bags incredible feat
Meanwhile, the win in Kolkata saw Bavuma become the fastest captain in history to record 10 victories without losing any matches. The only game that the Proteas failed to win under the 35-year-old's leadership was against West at the Port of Spain where the weather had the final say and the match had to be abandoned.
On the other hand, India failed to chase down a modest 124-run target against South Africa and got bowled out for just 93 on the third day of the Test. It was a humiliating defeat for the Men in Blue as the bowlers made the most out of the spin-friendly conditions. Simon Harmer was named the Player of the Match for picking up a total of eight wickets during the match. He proved to be a constant headache for the Indian batters at the Eden Gardens.
South Africa rise on WTC points table
This victory saw South Africa climb to the second place on the WTC 2025-27 standings with a PCT of 66.67. They have so far won two out of their three matches. On the other hand, India slipped down to the fourth position with a PCT of 54.17. The Men in Blue will be looking to bounce back in the second and final match of the Test series against Bavuma & Co. that will be played from November 22 at the Barsapara stadium in Guwahati.
