South Africa were bailed out of a precarious situation with a brilliant knock of 81 runs in 46 balls as they condemned India to yet another loss in the second match of the ongoing T20I series. Klaasen had a brilliant strike rate of 176.08 and hit seven fours and five sixes during his innings. His last appearance for the Proteas came against West Indies in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Ahead of the second match against India, Klaasen was informed by the coach that he might be drafted into the team to replace Quinton de Kock, who had injured his wrists. Opening up on this conversation, Klaasen said, "Quinny (Quinton de Kock) came up to me two days back in the team bus and said he injured his wrists. I thought he is a strong character and he will be fine. But yesterday again, he said his hand is not fine. Yesterday morning, we came to training and the coach told me I might play."
De Kock's absence was not felt like South Africa first restricted India to a subpar score of 148 runs, and then chasing down the total with 10 balls to spare. Klaasen was happy to score runs against India and hopes that his innings helps to increase the longevity of his career, "It always gives an indication but doesn't make it easier. I am glad the knock came against India. I hope it extends my career longer. I haven't performed well in the last couple of years. I am very happy and confident to be here."
Klaasen broke two personal records after his masterclass against the 2007 T20 World Cup champions. Klaasen's 81 is the highest individual score for South Africa against India in T20Is. The previous record was held by De Kock, who scored 79 in Bengaluru in 2019. His knock was also his career-best in the format, with his previous best of 69 also coming against India in 2018.
