Former India wicketkeeper and current Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) mentor and coach, Dinesh Karthik will lead Team India in Hong Kong Sixes tournament. Karthik has joined recently retired Ravichandran Ashwin in the Indian team for Hong Kong Sixes which is scheduled to be played between November 7 and 9.
“It is an absolute honour leading Team India at the Hong Kong Sixes, a tournament with such rich history and global recognition," Karthik said in a statement.
“I look forward to leading a group of players with impressive records, and together we aim to bring joy to the fans and play cricket that is both fearless and entertaining," he added.
Karthik's last appearance in a T20 League was in February 2025. He represented Paarl Royals in the SA20 League. From eight innings, he scored 130 runs at an average of 21.66 and strike rate of 121.49. He scored his maiden SA20 League fifty against Jo'burg Super Kings.
Ashwin up for the challenge
Ashwin will make his first appearance in Hong Kong Sixes after retiring from all forms of Indian cricket. His last appearance was in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 final.
“We have all watched the HK Sixes as youngsters on Television and it has always been an existing format that I wanted to be a part of. This format requires a different strategy and will prove to be high octane which I am looking forward to play alongside my ex-teammates. I am also thrilled to compete against some quality players in the opposition teams, it will be a good challenge for us,” Ashwin said.
Hong Kong Sixes format
For the unversed, Hong Kong Sixes is a six-player per side game. It is a six-over per side game but each over consists of eight deliveries.
Poor run in previous edition
The rest of the India squad for Hong Kong Sixes is yet to be revealed. In the last season, India's squad featured Robin Uthappa as captain. Other players were Bharat Chipli, Shreevats Goswami, Manoj Tiwary, Stuart Binny, Kedar Jadhav, Shahbaz Nadeem. India could not make it to the semifinals. They failed to win a single game and even lost to Oman.
