India’s former Test captain Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Rahane made the announcement via his Instagram account on July 30, more than three years since his last Test appearance.

"The reality of life is that everything has a beginning and everything has an end. When the time comes, you simply have to respect it and move forward. I have always relied on timing in my batting and I have always understood its importance. Today, I feel the timing is right for me to move on and announce my retirement from international cricket and all formats.," Rahane said in a statement.
Rahane got emotional towards the latter half of his statement. He thanked the MCA, BCCI, his family, friends, IPL franchises for supporting him.
The 38-year-old has ended his IPL career as well. KKR would need to name a new captain for the 2027 edition.
Rahane's career in numbers
Rahane made his Test debut in 2013 against Australia. He retires with 5,077 runs in 85 Test appearances, averaging 38.46. He has 12 centuries and 26 fifties in the format. He has played 90 ODIs, scoring 2,962 runs, averaging 35.26. He has three tons and 24 fifties in ODIs. He has played just 20 T20Is, scoring 375 runs at an average of 20.83, featuring a solitary fifty. His last ODI and T20I match was 2018 and 2016 respectively.
When was Rahane's last red-ball appearance?
Rahane's last appearance in first-class cricket was for Mumbai against Himachal Pradesh last year. He scored just a couple of runs but Mumbai went on to win the match by an innings and 120 runs.
Rahane's record as Test captain
Rahane has led India in six Tests when Virat Kohli wasn't available. In these four Tests, India won four whereas two ended in draws. He did not lose a single Test as skipper. His greatest achievement as Test captain was the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21 series win. Kohli had returned home after Adelaide drubbing for the birth of his first child. India went on to win the MCG Test, managed to draw at SCG and scripted history at The Gabba.
Rahane’s IPL journey and numbers
Rahane has played for six IPL teams in his career. He made his IPL debut in the inaugural edition for Mumbai Indians (MI). In IPL 2011, he moved to Rajasthan Royals where he played till the 2015 season. As RR faced a two-year ban, he played for now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giants (RPS). He returned to RR for two seasons as captain. Then, he was roped in by Delhi Capitals (DC) for two seasons. In IPL 2022, he made his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) debut. He revived his T20 career at Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He was part of their IPL 2023-winning season in 2023. He was roped in by KKR as their captain after Shreyas Iyer's exit. He played two seasons for KKR as skipper.
He played 212 IPL games, scoring 5,367 runs, averaging just over 30. His strike rate was 125.60. The Maharashtra-born batter scored 2 centuries and 35 fifties in his IPL career.
