Rishad Hossain's all-round heroics powered Bangladesh to a crushing 74-run win over the West Indies in the first One-Day International (ODI) in Mirpur on October 18. With this Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead over West Indies in the three-match series.

Crucially, the victory provides a much-needed morale boost for Bangladesh following their disappointing series loss to Afghanistan just days prior. Rishad Hossain was undoubtedly the star of the match with contributions in both innings. With the ball, he delivered a spectacular spell, claiming six wickets while conceding just 35 runs across his nine overs. He was equally effective with the bat, scoring a quickfire 26 runs off only 13 deliveries. This quick-fire knock, which included two towering sixes and a boundary, was vital in helping Bangladesh push past the 200-run mark and set a challenging target for the visitors.

In pursuit of Bangladesh's target of 207, the West Indies got off to a positive start, putting up 51 runs for the opening partnership. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Rishad broke the stand in the 11th over, dismissing Alick Athanaze leg-before-wicket for 27. From that point, wickets began to fall at regular intervals, allowing Bangladesh to steadily claw their way back into the match. Rishad’s phenomenal spell was the primary factor in the collapse. He first removed Brandon King for 44, who was caught behind by Nurul Hasan, and followed up by getting Keacy Carty caught at slip with a sharp edge for just 9. His devastating run continued as he also claimed the crucial wickets of Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, and Jayden Seales. This incredible performance secured his maiden five-wicket haul in One-Day Internationals, ensuring the West Indies' innings never found stability.
Complementing Rishad Hossain's heroics, the other spinners, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Tanvir Islam, also made key contributions. Miraz claimed the wicket of Shai Hope for 15, while Islam accounted for Gudakesh Motie for 3, effectively tightening the screws on the struggling Caribbean batting lineup. The fast-bowling department also played its part, with Mustafizur Rahman chipping in with two crucial wickets, dismissing both Justin Greaves for 12 and Romario Shepherd for 1. These contributions ensured that the West Indies never managed to build a threatening partnership or get close to the set target. The visitors were ultimately bowled out for just 133 in 39 overs, handing Bangladesh a dominant 74-run triumph.
