Legendary batter and former India captain Sachin Tendulkar has officially denied rumors that he is being considered for the position of BCCI President.
Sachin Tendulkar not in line to become BCCI president
For the last few days, speculation has been rife that the batting great could replace Roger Binny as the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, a statement from SRT Sports Management Private Ltd clarified that there have been no such developments, putting an end to all rumors.
“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),” the official statement from SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd stated.
“We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations,” the statement added.
The BCCI's President post is currently vacant, as Roger Binny stepped down earlier this year upon turning 70, in accordance with the BCCI's constitution which mandates that no office-bearer can continue after that age. In the interim, vice-president Rajeev Shukla has taken over as acting president.
Elections for the position are scheduled to be held at the upcoming BCCI Annual General Meeting. This has led to speculation that Tendulkar could be a unanimous choice for the role. A report from Dainik Jagran recently fueled these rumors, suggesting that a legendary Indian cricketer known for his record-breaking career was being considered for the top post. This follows a recent trend, as former players Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny have held the position since 2019.
Notably, Tendulkar has never held an administrative role. To be eligible for the BCCI presidency, a person must be an active member of a state cricket association. While a former India player automatically becomes a member of their respective state association, they must be nominated by that association to contest for an office-bearer position within the BCCI.
