Not 'Baby AB' anymore! Dewald Brevis becomes first-ever batter to score a T20I century against Australia in Australia, breaks CSK captain's record

South Africa’s Dewald Brevis scripted history at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin as he became the first batter to score a T20I century against Australia in Australia. Brevis reached his century from just 41 balls, the second-fastest for South Africa in the format. He is also the youngest South Africa to achieve the feat in T20Is. 

He is the first batter to score a T20I century in Australia and South Africa clashes. The previous record belonged to Hashim Amla who scored an unbeaten 97 at Cape Town in 2016. 

He registered the highest T20I score by a South Africa batter. He remained unbeaten for 125 off just 56 balls. He hit 12 fours and eight sixes in his scintillating knock. The previous record belonged to former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis who scored 119 runs from 56 balls against West Indies in 2015.

Overall, Brevis is the second visiting batter to score a T20I century in Australia. The first to achieve the feat was New Zealand's Glenn Phillips who scored 104 against Sri Lanka at Sydney Cricket Ground in T20 World Cup 2022.

Brevis breaks CSK captain's record

Brevis is the sixth batter to score a T20I century against Australia. It is also the highest individual T20I score against Australia. The first to achieve the feat was New Zealand's Brendon McCullum (116 not out), followed by Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan (104 not out), Kiwi batter Martin Guptill (105), India's Ruturaj Gaikwad (123 not out) and West Indies' Shai Hope (102 not out).

South Africa's record-breaking T20I total vs South Africa

The 22-year-old's knock helped South Africa post 218/7 on the board, their highest against Australia. This is the first time South Africa have crossed the 200-run mark in T20Is on Australia tour.

Earlier, Mitchell Marsh won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Proteas top order batters got starts but departed early. Brevis and Tristan Stubbs rebuilt the innings. They shared a 126-run partnership for the fourth wicket from 57 balls. Stubbs contributed with a 22-ball 31. Brevis continued to hit big as he broke records to help South Africa post a daunting score on the board.
