The fallout from the London nightclub fiasco involving Ben Stokes has rocked England cricket camp. Rob Key, the Director of England Cricket, is actively considering imposing a total alcohol ban on the squad. Crucially, Key offered absolutely no assurances that Ben Stokes will retain his position as the Test captain moving forward.

Rob Key contemplates strict alcohol ban on England team

This hardline stance comes in the wake of Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson being officially dropped from the second Test against New Zealand after their involvement in an off-field incident during the early hours of Monday morning.

This high-profile episode isn't an isolated incident; rather, it adds to a mounting string of disciplinary headaches that have plagued the England setup over the past six months. The team has faced intense public scrutiny, with multiple players frequently drawing negative attention for late-night outings. In a direct effort to curb the squad's controversial drinking habits during the winter, management had recently tightened off-field regulations by enforcing a mandatory midnight curfew. Both Stokes and Atkinson are understood to have directly violated these newly established restrictions.

In light of the latest breach, Rob Key emphasised that much stricter rules may now be necessary. He signaled that clamping down heavily on off-field behavior is paramount if the team has any hope of regaining the faith and trust of the cricket-loving public.

"Do we need to look at have we been strict enough?. Even when they win a game of cricket, is it now a time when there's just no alcohol at any time and at any stage?. I need to think through these things because I don't want to make a rash decision that hinders the team and creates a situation where they don't feel they can do anything. But the players now have to show the public they can be trusted. At this point it's hard to say they can," Key said at the media interaction at the Oval, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Rumors of Ben Stokes' retirement and captaincy dilemma

In the wake of the intense public backlash, whispers have begun circulating that Ben Stokes is considering stepping down from leadership and potentially retiring from the game altogether. However, when pressed on these sudden retirement rumors, Rob Key downplayed the speculation, telling BBC Sport, "He has not intimated that to me."

While Key was quite straightforward about Stokes’ future as a regular player, noting that he sees no reason why the star all-rounder shouldn't wear the England shirt again, the captaincy remains a completely different story.

No decision on Stokes will be made until thorough investigation

Key flatly refused to offer any guarantees or assurances about Stokes retaining the captaincy, leaving the future of England's Test leadership completely up in the air.

"There are a lot of things to happen before then. We've got to run the investigation, find out what happened exactly. We're in the midst of that at the moment. No decisions will be made until after that. We just have to let this play out. No decisions have been made on our side. We've not given him an ultimatum, we're just speaking to him all the time to make sure that he is alright. It's obviously been a traumatic time for him over the last few days. When things are like that you don't want to make any decisions. Time is our ally in this," he concluded.
