South Africa skipper Aiden Markram heaped praise on Dewald Brevis following the latter's terrific 41-ball century against Australia in the second T20I of the three-match series. After the Proteas had gotten restricted to 57/3 at one stage, the duo of Brevis and Tristan Stubbs formed a magnificent partnership of 126 runs to massively help the visitors get to a big total.
Brevis would return to the dugout unbeaten after playing a scintillating knock of 125 runs from just 56 deliveries. This inning was laced with 12 boundaries and 8 mammoth sixes and saw South Africa post a huge total of 218/7 in 20 overs.
Australia didn't perform well with the bat
In reply, no Australia batter except for Tim David was able to post a score of over 30 as the Proteas romped to a 53-run victory thanks to a brilliant bowling display. Kwena Maphaka and Corbin Bosch took three scalps each as the visitors bundled out the hosts for 165 runs and levelled the three-match series at 1-1. The series winner will now be decided in the third and final match which will be contested on August 16.
Meanwhile, following the conclusion of the match, Markram credited Brevis for South Africa's victory and remarked how the latter is still only 22 years old and will only be getting better from here.
"Nice to take it to the third game. You always worry after going 1-0 down that the third game might be for nothing. Great to get the win. (On Brevis) It was up there (with the best). The boys were just down there laughing. He hits it miles, quite a freakish display tonight, quite chuffed that the world got to see what he can do. He has played a lot of T20s around the world - he is still quite young, he will only get better. We know they (Australia) would come really hard. Holding nerve and sticking (to your strengths)…it is T20 cricket at the end of the day, so credit to the guys for holding their nerve," Markram said after the match, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
On the other hand, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh also hailed Brevis for getting South Africa to victory through his terrific hundred, but also had a cheeky remark in store for the young centurion.
"He mistimed quite a few sixes tonight. He is a young, powerful man. Upcoming player in international cricket and well played to him. Chasing that down was going to be tough. We needed a few partnerships early, could not do that," Marsh stated.
