The Indian Premier League (IPL) player auction ahead of the 16th edition of the T20 tournament will take place on December 19 in Dubai, as per a report by ESPNCricinfo. The players will go under the hammer while India take on South Africa in the second ODI of the three-ODI series in Gqeberha.
The ten IPL franchises will need to submit their list of retained and released players by November 15. The auction pool will be finalised in the first week of December. The purse of each franchise has been increased by Rs 5 crore to make it Rs 100 crore. After the franchises release the list of retained players, their actual purse for the auction will be ascertained.

With less than a month to go for the list to be submitted, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have the largest purse at Rs 12.20 crore followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) who have Rs 6.55 crore. Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) have the least amount in the purse at Rs 0.05 crore. Gujarat Titans (GT) and Delhi Capitals (DC) have Rs 4.45 crore each. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have Rs 3.55 crore followed by Rajasthan Royals (RR) with Rs 3.35 crore, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with Rs 1.75 crore, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) with Rs 1.65 crore and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with Rs 1.5 crore.
The mini-auction may see a few more records broken. While mega auctions are multi-day affairs, mini auctions have often broken records for the most expensive players. In last year’s auction, England all-rounder Sam Curran was roped in for Rs 18.5 crore by PBKS who could not qualify for the last four.
The most prominent player to give his name for the auction is likely to be Australia's Mitchell Starc. The left-arm pacer will be returning to IPL after a long absence of eight years. Australian captain Pat Cummins who opted out of IPL 2023 will also return.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK are the reigning champions. CSK beat Hardik Pandya’s GT in a last-ball thriller last season. Meanwhile, Dhoni is yet to make it clear whether he will be back in CSK colours for the next season or not.
