India's Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah gesture at the end of the second Test cricket match between India and England

Story Highlights:

Wasim Jaffer suggested BCCI to appoint Jasprit Bumrah as India's next Test captain.

India vs England Test series is scheduled to start from June 20.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer believes that Jasprit Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice in Test as regular skipper Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from the longest format of the game ahead of the upcoming five-Test match series against England.

Bumrah was Rohit's deputy during India's last red-ball outing in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and he also captained the side in first match of the series where India registered a dominating win against Australia. However, reportedly, Bumrah is not considered to lead India because of workload management. As per the reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is most likely to appoint Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma's successor to lead India in Tests.

Jaffer took his 'X' formerly known as Twitter to suggest BCCI that if Bumrah doesn't have any issues to lead the side, then give him captaincy and Gill to be appointed as vice captain, stepping in whenever Bumrah needs rest.

"I think Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice, unless he doesn't want the responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill as VC - stepping in whenever Bumrah needs rest. This way Gill could also be groomed without the pressure of being the full-time captain" posted Wasim Jaffer.

The five Test match series between India and England is scheduled to start from June 20 and this will be the first red-ball outing for India after a 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The BCCI will announce India's squad for the five-Test match series on Today or May 17.
