Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 was rocked by controversy just hours before the start of its sixth season after a co-owner of the Jaffna Kings franchise was arrested over alleged match-fixing offences. The detention came on the day of the tournament's official launch, casting a shadow over the opening match and raising fresh questions about the franchise's administration.

Despite the arrest, the tournament is set to proceed as scheduled, with defending champions Jaffna Kings taking on Galle Gallants in the season opener.
Jaffna Kings co-owner detained over alleged match-fixing
The arrest was carried out by the Sri Lanka Police Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports on allegations linked to match-fixing.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the franchise co-owner, while confirming that investigations remain ongoing and additional details are expected to emerge in due course.
The detention took place just hours before the official launch of the LPL 2026 on July 17, with the opening ceremony followed by the first match at the Sinhalese Sports Club Cricket Ground in Colombo.
Although the arrest has sparked concerns surrounding the Jaffna Kings' governance, there has been no immediate impact on the tournament schedule, with the franchise still expected to feature in the opening fixture.
Sri Lanka's strict anti-corruption laws under spotlight
Sri Lanka became the first South Asian nation to criminalise match-fixing and sports-related corruption after introducing the Prevention of Offences Related to Sports Act in 2019.
Under the legislation, individuals found guilty of match-fixing, sharing inside information, manipulating playing surfaces for betting purposes, or deliberately misapplying rules can face up to 10 years in prison along with significant financial penalties.
The 2026 edition of the Lanka Premier League will feature five franchises competing in a double round-robin league stage followed by the playoffs, with the final scheduled for August 8. Alongside Jaffna Kings and Galle Gallants, the other teams in this year's competition are Kandy Royals, Dambulla Sixers, and Colombo Kaps.
While the authorities continue their investigation, the arrest has placed the spotlight firmly on the league's anti-corruption measures ahead of another highly anticipated LPL season.
