The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the player regulations for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Saturday. These regulations included the guidelines for the mega auction, which is expected to take place in November. Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were relieved to hear this news. CSK was primarily worried about whether they could keep MS Dhoni, who had previously stated at an occasion that his future in the competition hinged solely on the retention rules, as the talks around the IPL super auction grew more and more intense.
"There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team," he had said.
However, the BCCI has reinstated the "uncapped player" rule, which was previously eliminated after 2021, clearing the way for the former captain of India to resume his IPL career. As stated in the IPL statement that was made public on the rule, "a capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will be applicable for Indian Players only."
MS Dhoni likely to suffer pay cut
The IPL Governing Council members met in Bengaluru on Saturday and reinstated the rule after a positive discussion at the BCCI Headquarters in July with the owners of the ten franchises. After he resigned as captain prior to the 2024 season, CSK paid INR 12 crore to keep Dhoni on board. The 43-year-old, who retired from international cricket in 2020, would get much less money if CSK decides to keep him around. A source in ESPNCricinfo states that Dhoni's current salary is INR 4 crore, which suggests a loss of 66.67 per cent.
