The reason behind the long journey is a joyful one: Devon and his wife, Kim Conway, are preparing to welcome their second child. Given the break between matches, the batter chose to prioritize being by his wife's side for this major life milestone rather than staying in England with his teammates.

New Zealand look to bounce back after first Test jolt

New Zealand is currently playing catch-up in the series after England thrashed the Kiwis by 115 runs in the opening Test at Lord's to claim a 1-0 lead. Conway had a mixed outing in that match, registering scores of 1 and 41 across his two innings. The team faces a crucial, must-win situation heading into the second Test, which is scheduled to begin on January 17 at The Oval in London.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has officially confirmed Conway's travel arrangements, expressing full support for the family. The board remains highly confident that the star opener will return to England well in time for the clash at The Oval, ensuring he is available to help the Black Caps fight back in this vital World Test Championship (WTC) series.

“BLACKCAPS batter Devon Conway has briefly returned home to New Zealand to welcome the birth of his second child. Conway will spend some time at home with family before flying back to London ahead of the second Test against England at The Oval, starting Wednesday 17 June,” NZC's statement read.

Following the intense opening Test at Lord’s, New Zealand squad has been granted a brief, well-deserved break to recharge. The players are scheduled to regroup at The Oval later this week to kick off their training sessions and iron out their strategies ahead of the high-stakes second match against England.

Matt Henry's fitness in focus

While the rest of the squad rests, the team management is keeping a very close eye on fast bowler Matt Henry, who was visibly hampered by back spasms during the opening Test. The medical staff is actively monitoring his rehabilitation, remaining hopeful that the extra recovery time will get him match-ready for selection next week in London.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham provided an update on the pacer's condition:

"I think it's a day-by-day case with Henners. Fingers crossed, he keeps progressing the way he has from day one to where he is now [on day four]. We've got a little bit of extra time now to hopefully get him right, and then, fingers crossed, we'll have a full bowling attack to pick from again."

On the other side of the boundary, the England camp has been rocked by a major off-field controversy. In a shocking development, captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have both been dropped from the squad following a late-night nightclub incident. In the wake of this sudden disciplinary action, veteran batter Joe Root has been called upon to step up and lead the hosts for the second Test against the Kiwis.
