Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from the Test captain of Indian cricket team on January 15, has been nothing less than surprising. And if one wants to talk about his records as a Test captain of Indian team then the numbers will be absolutely astonishing. In the year 2014, when Kohli took over the Test captaincy, Indian Test team were ranked at number 4 and presently they are holding rank one. But despite this, Kohli would have still wanted to finish his journey as a Test skipper by defeating New Zealand in the final of World Test Championship (WTC).

But not only in Tests, under Kohli's leadership, team India failed to win even a single ICC trophy in ODIs and T20s as well. In total, Kohli got a chance to win ICC trophy four times, but sadly in all these, he could not do enough to clinch one ICC tournament.

Starting from 2014

Kohli took over the Test captaincy from Mahendra Singh Dhoni back in 2014. In 2017, Dhoni left the ODI captaincy as well and since then Kohli has been leading team India in the ODIs also.

Dhoni managed to win ICC tournaments as the leader of the Indian team but unfortunately that was not the case with Kohli. The Delhi-born batter might have won several bilateral series as a captain and exhibited his prolific skills of being a successful and an aggressive captain. But when it comes down to the ICC tournaments, Kohli's record seemed to have looked a little pale.

It was in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, where Kohli got the chance of winning his first ICC trophy as the skipper of the Indian team. The Champions Trophy was played in England but in the final match against arch-rivals Pakistan, the Men in Blue had to concede a heartbreaking defeat.

2019 World Cup defeat

After the Champions Trophy defeat, Indian team had to suffer another defeat in the ICC tournament and this time it was against New Zealand in the semi-finals of the ICC 2019 ODI World Cup. And in the year 2021, Indian team once more failed to defeat the Kiwis in a prestigious ICC event as this time it was the final of the first ICC World Test Championship. In another ICC event in 2021, India lost to the Kiwis  and eventually had to be disqualified from the T20 World Cup.

So, as it turns out that Kohli could not win the title of ICC Trophy in the ODI format for India on two occasions. As a result of that he was stripped off the ODI captaincy.

Kohli’s dream of lifting one ICC trophy remained unfulfilled. In all the three formats of the game, Kohli captained in a total of 213 matches and won 135 matches while losing in 60 matches. His win percentage was 63 but still failed to win a single ICC trophy.
