Indian captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from T20Is after India won the T20 World Cup 2024. After Rohit's retirement, Hardik Pandya was the potential candidate to lead Men in Blue in the shortest format of the game but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I captain ahead of India's tour to Sri Lanka for three T20Is followed by three ODIs. He is expected to lead India in the next T20 World Cup in 2026.
Before Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill was appointed as the captain of the young team for India's tour of Zimbabwe for the five-match T20I series. Later for T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, Gill was appointed as the vice-captain. Before that Gill was appointed as the captain of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans. Considering that, former India star Suresh Raina reckoned that if GT won the IPL title then Gill would be India's future captain.
“Shubman Gill is a superstar. Gill is vice-captain it means someone is thinking about him. If he does well in the IPL and win the trophy he is the future (captaincy). He will be the next super star,” Raina told PTI.

He last played a Test match in 2022 against Bangladesh at Mirpur. Raina said that Pant is looking very good and he has been keeping well in Duleep Trophy.
"He is looking very good. He scored a fifty in Duleep Trophy. He has been keeping well. When you talk about a Test match you play it session by session.
