Ollie Robinson completes 100 wickets, records best bowling average in 112 years surpassing Jasprit Bumrah

England pacer Ollie Robinson scripted history on Day 1 of the third and final Test of the series against Pakistan at Edgbaston, Birmingham. With the wicket of Saim Ayub for a 10-ball duck, Robinson completed 100 Test wicket. Robinson also recorded the best Test bowling average in 112 years, surpassing India's pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

Among bowlers with 100 Test wickets or more, Robinson's bowling average of 19.23 (at the time of lunch break on Day 1) is the seventh-best. The bowlers ahead of him are England's George Lahmann (122 wickets at 10.75), Sydney Barrnes (189 wickets at 16.43), Australia's Charlie Tarner (101 wickets at 16.53), England's Bobby Peel (101 wickets at 16.98), Jonny Briggs (118 wickets at 17.75) and Colin Blythe (100 wickets at 18.63).

The only other bowler with 100 wickets and an average below 20 is Bumrah. The Indian pacer has 234 Test wickets at an average of 19.79.

At the end of first session of Day 1, Robinson has 101 wickets at an average of 19.23. Overall, his bowling average in Tests is 14th best.

Robinson’s spell in gloomy 1st session

Robinson appealed successful against Ayub on the fifth ball of the first over of the innings. Ayub opted for DRS and overturned the lbw decision. In his next over, Robinson got Ayub out lbw for a 10-ball duck. 

Robinson has the best Test bowling average in Tests post World War 1. He took 24 Tests to take 100 Test wickets, equalling with Tony Lock. Only four other England bowlers have reached 100 Test wickets in fewer games post World War 2.

In his fifth over, Robinson got the wicket of Abdullah Shafique. The wobble seam led to an outside edge and Dan Lawrence took a low catch at gully.

Another collapse for Pakistan

In the first session, Robinson bowled eight overs including three maidens, conceded nine runs and claimed two wickets. Jofra Archer bagged two whereas Josh Tongue struck thrice as Pakistan were 100/7 from 23 overs at the stroke of lunch.
