Story Highlights:

Prithvi Shaw was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad and instructed to lose weight.

Shaw was not in the best of form in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25.

Shaw was not picked by any of the IPL franchises in the mega auction or as replacement.

Once considered a prodigy, Mumbai's star opener Prithvi Shaw has been absent from the senior side for nearly four years. In a bid to revive his career, Shaw has written a letter to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) seeking No Objection Certificate (NOC).

"He has written a letter to us seeking NOC. However, a final call will be taken after discussion," a source close to the developments told Sports Tak.

What happened to Shaw in the last season?

Last year, Shaw was dropped from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy side due to poor fitness. Shaw was instructed to attend a two-week fitness programme under the MCA trainers and shed a few kilos.

Shaw wasn't picked in Mumbai's Vijay Hazare Trophy squad and expressed his disappointment via a social media post. He also vowed to make a comeback.

“Tell me God, what more do I have to see.. if 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126, I’m not good enough… but I will keep my faith in you and hopefully people believe in me still… cause I will come back for sure.. Om Sai Ram..”

However, he was picked in Mumbai's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy side. From nine games, he scored 197 runs at an average of 21.88 and strike rate of 156.34. He did not score a single half-century in the season but Mumbai went on to win the title under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy.

“We can’t babysit anyone, right? He has played so much of cricket. Everyone has given him inputs. At the end of the day, it’s his job to figure out things for himself. And he has also done it in the past. It’s not that he hasn’t. He has to focus. He has to sit back, put a thinking cap on. He will get the answer by himself. No one can force him to do anything,” Iyer had said when he was asked about Shaw's lack of form.

Ignored by IPL franchises, long absence from Indian squad

Shaw went unsold in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction despite a base price of Rs 75 lakh after he was released by Delhi Capitals (DC). He wasn't picked by any of the franchises during the season despite several injuries as they backed young talent.

The 25-year-old has been missing from the Indian squad for nearly four years. His last ODI and T20I appearance was in July 2021 on Sri Lanka tour. His last Test was on Australian soil in 2020. From five Tests, he has scored 339 runs at an average of 42.37, including a century and two fifties. In ODIs, he has scored 189 runs at an average of 31.50. In his only T20I appearance, he was dismissed for a golden duck.

Shaw's recent form

In the Mumbai T20 League, he led North Mumbai Panthers. He scored 137 runs from five innings. His notable knock of 74 runs from 52 balls came against Eagle Thane Strikers.
