Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from IPL

Ashwin will reportedly participate in The Hundred next year

Legendary India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from IPL on Wednesday after having played for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the season contested earlier this year. The 38-year-old announced this decision through a social media post where he also stated that he is interested in playing T20 leagues around the world.

Just hours after the massive announcement from Ashwin, a report by The Telegraph has come out, stating that the spinner is keen to feature in The Hundred next season which is England's 100-ball/side competition. The tournament was first introduced in 2021 and its fifth edition is currently going on. If Ashwin does make the decision of playing in The Hundred, then he will become the first Indian men's player to feature in the competition.

It will be huge for The Hundred as a whole if Ashwin decides to join as many Indian people may decide to tune in to the tournament as well. The next season of the competition will see multiple teams get rebranded to match their parent franchise’s names and the salary of the players is also expected to increase massively.

Meanwhile, Ashwin made a sudden post about his retirement from IPL on Wednesday, August 27. He also reflected on the relationships and memories that he had formed with other players during his 16-season long journey in the league.

"Special day and hence a special beginning. They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today," Ashwin wrote on his social media handle.

"Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the @IPL and the @BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me," he concluded.

Ashwin's stellar IPL career

Ashwin finished his IPL career with a total of 187 wickets in 221 matches. He is one of the highest wicket-takers in the tournament's history and featured for a total of five franchises during his journey in the cash-rich league. CSK was the side where Ashwin achieved the most success as he won the competition two times in the eight seasons he spent with the franchise.
