The new era of Indian cricket got off to an ideal start under head coach Rahul Dravid with dominating win in T20Is followed by Test series wins over New Zealand. The Men in Blue's next mission will be to confront Proteas on their home soil. While India's Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa is expected to be named on December 7, Rohit Sharma, who was recently selected as India's T20I captain, is highly likely to be named as the team's ODI captain. It will make him the team's permanent skipper in white-ball cricket.
Ajinkya Rahane, India's current Test vice-captain, whose form has been a source of concern recently, may lose his position as vice-captain in the longest format. This could be evidenced by his injury just before the start of the Mumbai Test against the Kiwis.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the Test squad for the South African tour on Tuesday (December 7), as some national selectors, including chairman Chetan Sharma, were in Mumbai during Day 4 of the Test match between India and New Zealand.
In South Africa, India are scheduled to play three Tests, starting December 26, which will be followed by three ODIs. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has also announced the revised schedule of the series on December 6. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce the ODI squad much later as selectors will keep an eye on 50-over domestic tournament Vijay Hazare Trophy.
The updated schedule is as follows:

03-07 January 22: 2nd Test, Imperial Wanderers, Johannesburg
