Secretary A Shankar and treasurer E S Jairam both decided to resign from their respective posts in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) following the stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru which took place on Wednesday, a day after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) six-run victory in the IPL 2025 final against the Punjab Kings at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad.
The stampede proved to be fatal for some RCB fans
Following RCB's first-ever IPL triumph, a victory parade and felicitation ceremony was announced as a way to celebrate the side winning the coveted title. However, what should have been a day of celebration and joy turned into an absolute nightmare as sheer mismanagement of the event lead to a stampede outside the stadium in Bengaluru. The stampede proved to be fatal and took the lives of 11 people, leaving many injured as well.
The shocking thing here is the fact that the felicitation ceremony, which took place inside the stadium wasn't stopped despite the horrid scenes outside and went mostly as planned.
Both Shankar and Jairam said in a joint statement that they have decided to resign from their respective posts in the KSCA and have submitted their resignations to the association's President Raghuram Bhat.
"...due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days, and though our role was very limited, we wish to state that we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association," the statement read.
In the aftermath of the tragic incident, Bengaluru Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and RCB announced a compensation of INR 10 lakh each to the families of all the victims. The Bengaluru-based franchise also announced the setting up of a fund called RCB Cares for the people who got injured due to the stampede.
