India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer was in the ICU after getting injured in the third ODI against Australia at Sydney Cricket Stadium in Sydney. Iyer, who was appointed as India's ODI vice-captain before the while ball series against Australia, got injured while taking a catch and rushed back to the hospital in the middle of the game.
Iyer recovering well
Sports Tak understands that the Mumbai batter is out of danger now, and he has his phone and he started talking to friends and family from the hospital. The source further revealed that Iyer is recovering well and has started eating solid food.
Sources familiar with the development told Sports Tak that Shreyas spoke to several teammates over the phone. Shreyas is eating solid food. Not only has Shreyas moved out of the ICU and is recovering well, but he has also started eating solid food and appears to be in a positive mental state. He’s talking with his teammates, and it’s expected that his recovery will accelerate once his family joins him. BCCI’s team doctor is with Shreyas and is taking full care of him.
Suryakumar Yadav on Iyer's injury
India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is currently in Australia for the five-match T20I series, which is scheduled to start from October 29. Ahead of the T20I series opener, Surya said that Iyer will come back to India alongside the T20I squad after recovery.
"Doctors and physios said it was an unfortunate injury; this is quite rare. Shreyas is also a rare talent. Rare incidents happen with rare talent. But it’s fine, God has been with him and he’s recovering well. BCCI is in full support, and we will take him home alongside" Suryakumar said in the pre-match press conference in Canberra.
How did Shreyas Iyer get injured?
The incident happened on the fifth ball of the 34th over in the third ODI in Sydney, bowled by Harshit Rana, who bowled a short of length outside off delivery, and Alex Carey throws his arms at it (probably trying to go over mid-off/extra cover) and ends up slicing it a long way up in the air. Shreyas turns around and runs back from the backward point, times his jumps perfectly and holds onto it even as the ball slips out a bit. He falls awkwardly to his left side and has injured himself.
