In the aftermath of sexting scandal, Tim Paine has announced an indefinite break from all forms of cricket just before the Ashes 2021-22. Paine made the decision just a week after he tearfully quit as captain after revelations of a scandal involving the sending of inappropriate texts to a female co-worker in 2017.
Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive Nick Hockley on Friday (November 26) revealed that the wicketkeeper-batter will be stepping away from cricket for an indefinite period of time.
"We recognise that this is an incredibly difficult time for Tim and his family and are committed to supporting them," Hockley said in a statement.
"We respect and understand Tim's decision to have a break at this time to focus on his and his family's well-being," the CA chief executive added.
Before the scandal came to limelight, Paine was all set to captain Australia in the upcoming Ashes Test at the Gabba on his 37th birthday (December 8). In addition Paine has withdrawn from Tasmania's One-day match against Western Australia on Friday. Earlier he had played for Tasmania's second XI where he took six catches in an innings.
"Following discussions over the last 24 hours, Tim Paine has advised Cricket Tasmania that he will be taking a leave of absence from all forms of cricket for the foreseeable future," Cricket Tasmania said in a statement.
"Cricket Tasmania will continue to support Tim and his family both professionally and personally over the summer," the officials added.
The first Test of the Ashes will start at the iconic Gabba in Brisbane on December 8. Pat Cummins will be leading the Aussies with Steve Smith as his deputy against Joe Root's side.
