Australia T20I captain Mitchell Marsh had nothing but praise for Glenn Maxwell after the latter carried the side to a thrilling two-wicket victory over South Africa in the final game of the three-match T20I series. The 36-year-old played a stunning knock of 62 runs from 36 deliveries taking the Baggy Greens home in the final over of the match. This win saw the hosts seal the highly entertaining series by 2-1.

Maxwell was simply exceptional

It looked like the Proteas would script a famous victory at the Cazalys stadium after they had restricted the hosts to 122/6 at one stage which chasing the atrget of 173. However, Maxwell had other ideas as despite tail-enders on the other end, the experienced all-rounder kept the strike with him and smashed the opposing bowlers all around the stadium in Cairns. The equation eventually came down to 4 runs from 2 deliveries and the 36-year-old finished the match in style by hitting a reverse-scoop for a boundary.

Marsh remarked that the side is lucky to have Maxwell by pointing out how incredibly flexible he has been and has batted on different positions in each of the three matches. He further labelled the all-rounder as 'world-class'.

"Obviously it's always nice to win the the close ones in T20 cricket and it was a little bit unorthodox, but very thankful that Max (Glenn Maxwell) got us over the line. You never know what's going to happen that's for sure, but he's a world-class player, he's been so flexible. Think he's batted in three different positions in each game and we're just lucky to have him, he does everything um and he was class tonight," Marsh said after the match, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Maxwell, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, shared his views after playing the match-winning knock for the Baggy Greens and revealed that he had gotten quite nervous after the side had lost wickets on consecutive deliveries to Corbin Bosch in the 19th over of their innings.

"It was a little bit nerve wracking. I think when we lost a couple of wickets in a row, Corbin Bosch bowled a brilliant over to sort of keep the run rate sort of near nine or ten and we were down the two wickets and I probably had to do the majority of the striking but it was it was nice to get a couple out of the middle right near the end," Maxwell said.
