India head coach Gautam Gambhir feels that the team are not where they want to be in terms of preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup that will commence in February of 2026. He also highlighted the importance of fitness and said that the team has three months to reach where they want to be.
India in excellent form
This statement comes after the Men in Blue continued their sensational run of form under the guidance of Suryakumar Yadav and defeated Australia by 2-1 in the five-match T20I series. They are in top form when it comes to the shortest format and are yet to lose a series since Suryakumar took over in July, 2024. They also won the 2025 Asia Cup, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.
“Our dressing room has been very transparent and honest, and we aim to maintain that. I think we’re still not at our target for the T20 World Cup," Gambhir said in a clip shared by BCCI.
“Hopefully, the players understand the importance of being fit. We have three months left to reach where we need to be," he added.
The 2026 T20 World Cup will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka and will go on from February 7 to March 8. A recent report by The Indian Express claimed that the tournament opener and final will be held at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad while one of the two semi-finals will take place at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. The ICC have also reportedly made it clear to BCCI that if an India-Pakistan final happens, then it will take place at a neutral venue in Colombo.
India to host South Africa next
Meanwhile, India will be hosting South Africa next for two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. The gruelling assignment will commence from November 14 and will be a big test for the Men in Blue in all the formats. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav & Co. had defeated the Proeas by 3-1 in the four-match T20I series that had been held during late 2024. It remains to be seen if Team India will be able to continue their stellar form in the shortest format or not.
