The West Indies cricket team has a new leader at the helm of their Test side, with the appointment of experienced all-rounder Roston Chase as captain. This decision was made almost two months after Kraigg Brathwaite stepped down as West Indies Test skipper.
Roston Chase becomes West Indies' new Test captain
Roston Chase's first assignment as the West Indies Test captain will be the West Indies' upcoming three-match Test series against Australia, scheduled to be played on home soil between June and July. After Australia series, West Indies will engage in a two-match Test outing against India in October. Notably, Roston Chase last featured in a Test match for the West Indies in March 2023, marking a gap of over two years.
Kraigg Brathwaite's decision to step down from the captaincy came in March of this year, shortly after the West Indies concluded a Test series in Pakistan with a 1-1 draw.
Roston Chase brings a wealth of experience to the captaincy, having played 49 Test matches since his debut in July 2016. Throughout his Test career, he has accumulated over 2,000 runs at an average of 26.33, including five centuries and eleven half-centuries. Additionally, his right-arm off-spin bowling has yielded 85 wickets for the team.
Currently, Roston Chase is with the West Indies squad in Ireland, participating in a three-match One Day International (ODI) series against the host nation. Following this series, the West Indies will travel to England for another three-match ODI series later this month.
As the newly appointed Test captain, Roston Chase will lead the West Indies in their three-match Test series against Australia. The first Test of the series is set to be played in Bridgetown from June 25 to June 29. This series will also mark the beginning of the West Indies' campaign in the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
