India's captain Shubman Gill walks with the trophy after his team's win in the only Test against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Chandigarh on June 8, 2026.

Story Highlights:

Sri Lanka slipped from 3rd to 6th place after their defeat to West Indies.

West Indies went past Pakistan, moving up from the bottom of the points table.

West Indies have finally managed to win a Test after a long break of 17 months. West Indies beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs to open their win account in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27. The win helped them rise from the bottom of the WTC points table and move to eighth spot as their win percentage was in double digits after a long time.

West Indies’ rise led to Shan Masood-led Pakistan slipping to the ninth spot. The bottom-placed Pakistan had faced an eigth-point deduction. They will stay at the bottom until they win a Test on the Pakistan tour in August. They are the only team with a win percentage in single digit.

The massive defeat led to Sri Lanka slipping from third spot to sixth. This was their first defeat of the ongoing cycle.

Sri Lanka's dip meant that New Zealand, Bangladesh and India moved up to third, fourth and fifth place respectively. The update came a few weeks ahead of Shubman Gill-led India's tour of Sri Lanka.

Changes expected after ENG vs NZ 3rd Test

One more change can take place in the WTC standing this week. If New Zealand beat England in the Test series decider, they will move to the second spot. If England win in skipper Ben Stokes' farewell game, they will exchange places with fourth-placed Bangladesh. However, despite the win, England will stay at the seventh place.

At the end of Day 4's play, England were 103/4 from 15 overs in the run chase of 373 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The hosts need 270 more runs to win the Test.

Later this week, West Indies and Sri Lanka will lock horns in Antigua again. If Sri Lanka win the second Test, they will move to the fifth place.
