One of the most attacking South African openers, Herschelle Gibbs feels Rohit Sharma is more technically sound that Virat Kohli who considered him as his idol during Under-19 World Cup days. The senior duo retired from Test wicket within a short span this month. Since their retirement, videos of their batting has been shared widely on social media. One of those videos is a comparison of how both batters have tackled spin in Test cricket of late.
"This is the real difference between them, Kohli tries to play the same type of shot every time even if he gets out doing it He doesn't elevate his game But Rohit literally tries different kinds of shots every time, even in his worst form. Kohli doesn't have that ability to adapt, but Rohit does that's why Rohit has succeeded in playing fine Test cricket even after his mid-30s," a Twitter user wrote in the caption of the video shared.
Gibbs reacted to the video saying that it is the job of the batting coach to help them explore more scoring options.
"It’s up to the batting coach to give him more options to score no matter who the batter is.. thank me later," wrote the former Proteas batter.
Then, one of the Twitter asked him who is a better batter among two as far as technique is concerned.
"I disagree with u on that ... Virat technically is much better as compared to Rohit ... Remember, Rohit has been shifted up and down quite a lot ... Even today I'm not sure of which position he was comfortable to bat in Tests," replied the 51-year-old.
Another Twitter used disagreed with Gibbs. Then, the veteran of 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is talked about Kohli's vulnerability against the ball on the fourth and fifth stump of late leading to dismissals behind the stumps.
"You ever see Rohit defend balls on the 4th or 5th stump ? How many times did Virat get out doing just that ? Rohit definitely technically better than virat," he further explained.
How Rohit, Kohli performed on their last Test tour
Rohit and Kohli's last Test series was on Australian soil. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit missed the first Test and then managed to score 31 runs from five innings before opting out of Sydney Test. Meanwhile, Kohli started with a bang, scoring a century in Perth Test but he could not carry forward the momentum.
