MS Dhoni has announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket.

India veteran speedster Mohammed Shami revealed his conversation with India's great captain MS Dhoni about his retirement plans ahead his international comeback. MS Dhoni has announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket. He recently stepped down from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captaincy just before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. There were reports that IPL 2024 was the last season for Dhoni as a player considering his age. However, he has not announced anything about his retirement plans.

Shami who will make his international comeback in international cricket after ODI World Cup 2023 final revealed that Dhoni told him that the right time to announce retirement is when you stop enjoying the game.

"You [media] guys have been putting a question mark on his future the man himself says, 'Dekha Jayega’ [let’s see]," Shami said on Mishra's podcast 'Unplugged'.

"I had this conversation with Mahi bhai, asking 'When should a player retire?”. He said, 'First when you yourself get bored and second, Jab lage ki laat padne wali hai (when you realise that you would be kicked out of the team).

"But the first and foremost thing is that when you stop enjoying the game, it’s a sign that your time has come. Better you choose the best moment to retire. Because your body starts intimating you if you can’t sustain a particular format. That’s when a player should call it time," he added.

MS Dhoni is arguably one of the most successful captains India have ever produced. India have won all the ICC titles of that time under his captaincy. Dhoni has proved his skills in the IPL as well by becoming the most successful captain of the tournament. Under Dhoni's captaincy CSK joint most (5) IPL titles.

On the other hand, Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers in the ODI World Cup 2023 where he picked 24 wickets in the marquee event. He last featured against Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023.
