New Zealand's ace pacer Lockie Ferguson is facing a major fitness hurdle as he prepares for the upcoming ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, following a calf injury sustained during an ILT20 match in Dubai last month. The New Zealand pacer was forced to leave the field just three deliveries into his second over while representing the Desert Vipers against MI Emirates on December 21. This setback has officially ruled him out of the remainder of the ILT20 and the Big Bash League, disrupting his crucial build-up to the World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

In response to his absence, franchise teams have moved quickly to fill the void. The Desert Vipers secured Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq as a replacement, while Sam Curran stepped up to take over captaincy duties. Ferguson was also set to feature in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Thunder; however, the Australian club has since drafted England all-rounder David Willey to bolster their squad after the severity of the injury was confirmed. This latest calf issue follows a string of minor niggles that have hampered Ferguson's consistency throughout the current season.

Ferguson doubtful for T20 World Cup 2026?
The recent injury to Lockie Ferguson has left New Zealand selectors facing a major dilemma. The 34-year-old "enforcer," known for his high-velocity pace and deceptive knuckle balls, has not featured for the Black Caps since November 2024. Having already missed the Champions Trophy due to a hamstring issue, his latest calf strain disrupts his build-up to the T20 World Cup, where his ability to impact middle overs on subcontinental tracks was considered vital.
The timing is particularly difficult as New Zealand's pace battery is already under significant strain. With young seamer Will O'Rourke sidelined by a back injury, the team is lacking "hit-the-deck" options. The selectors had originally hoped Ferguson would lead the attack during the upcoming five-match T20I series in India, which serves as a final dress rehearsal before their World Cup opener against Afghanistan in Chennai on February 8.

The most encouraging news for the camp comes from the SA20, where Adam Milne has made an emphatic return from an ankle injury. Representing Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Milne has looked sharp and controlled, recently claiming impressive figures of 2/7 and 4/25. His ability to maintain high pace while providing early breakthroughs has offered a much-needed boost to New Zealand's planning.
