India will take on England in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal

Mumbai's Wankhede stadium will host the IND vs ENG semifinal on March 5

The stage is set for the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal where India and England will lock horns with each other in Mumbai for a place in the title clash. After previous knockout encounters in Adelaide (2022) and Guyana (2024), the rivalry moves to the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This trilogy match carries immense weight, as the winner of the previous two semi-final meetings went on to lift the trophy.

The path to the final four has been a test of resilience for the co-hosts. India’s campaign hit a snag with a defeat against South Africa, turning their final Super 8 fixtures into must-win games. They responded clinically by brushing aside Zimbabwe and clinching a nail-biting thriller against the West Indies to secure their qualification. Meanwhile, the other side of the bracket sees South Africa taking on New Zealand at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Here’s What Happens If India vs England semis gets washed out:

While the weather forecast for Mumbai appears clear for matchday, the ICC has established strict protocols should rain intervene. A reserve day is in place, and unlike the group stages, a minimum of 10 overs per side is required to constitute a result. Notably, if the match is entirely washed out across both days, England would progress to the final due to their superior standing as Group 2 toppers, while India finished second in Group 1.

ICC has established clear protocols in the event that the semi-final is abandoned. To ensure a winner is determined, a dedicated reserve day has been scheduled. If rain interrupts play on the primary matchday this Thursday, officials have an additional 90 minutes of buffer time to complete the fixture. During this window, they have the authority to reduce the number of overs to reach a conclusion on the same day if necessary.

According to the official ICC playing conditions, a result can only be achieved if both teams have the opportunity to bat for a minimum of ten overs. If play cannot resume by the required cut-off time to meet this ten-over threshold on the scheduled day, the match will be officially abandoned for the day. In such a case, the Reserve Day will be utilized to either complete the remaining overs or replay the match entirely, depending on how much progress was made.

England have an edge over India

Should the weather prove so persistent that no play is possible even after the conclusion of the reserve day, the regulations defer to previous tournament performance. In this specific scenario, the team that finished higher in the Super 8 standings will automatically progress to the final.

This rule currently favors England, who finished at the top of their Super 8 group with a perfect record of three wins and six points. India, having finished second in their respective group with two victories and four points, would unfortunately be eliminated if the weather prevents the game from being completed.
