India's head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Sanju Samson for his match-winning performance against the West Indies, noting that the innings was crucial in keeping India's T20 World Cup hopes alive. In a high-stakes Super Eights clash at Eden Gardens, Samson expertly timed his knock to help the defending champions chase down a target of 196, securing a five-wicket victory in front of 67,000 spectators.
Despite having played only one group stage match against Namibia, where he scored 22, Samson was recalled for the crucial Super Eights game against Zimbabwe to provide a right-handed option at the top of the order. Following a 24-run effort in that match, Gambhir decided to retain him for the showdown with the West Indies.

Sanju Samson is a world-class player: Gautam Gambhir
That decision paid off handsomely, as Samson delivered a sparkling, unbeaten 97 off just 50 balls, featuring 12 fours and four sixes. However, Gambhir emphasised that maintaining this momentum will require another 'special effort' when India faces England in the semi-final.
"We all know how good a player Sanju is. It was all about backing him and when the team needed him the most. Obviously today was the day when he probably showed his full potential. I have always said that he is a world-class player. He is a great talent and hopefully he can kick on from now and we can see a lot more innings like this," Gambhir said at the post-match press conference.
Following their high-stakes victory in Kolkata, India now shift their focus to Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium for a semi-final clash against England on March 5. They face England that have been building significant momentum, having swept all of their Super Eight matches and showing ominous signs of improvement as the tournament reaches its peak.
Gambhir noted that the transition to Mumbai will introduce a fresh set of hurdles, as the conditions at Wankhede differ greatly from those at Eden Gardens. He emphasised that India must adapt quickly to these new challenges to maintain their championship trajectory.
We will need a special effort to beat a quality side like England: Gambhir
Given England’s growing confidence and dangerous form, Gambhir warned that anything less than a 100% effort would be insufficient. He made it clear that a flawless performance is required if India hopes to secure their place in next Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad.
"Look, they're a world-class team, they're a quality team, they've got a lot of quality players as well. We all know that playing at the Wankhede is a tough game, but it's another opportunity to do something special for the team and for the country," the former India captain further stated.
"Hopefully we play our best game, that is going to be very important and we can keep ticking all the boxes. Because we will need a special effort to beat a quality side like England," he concluded.
