“The England & Wales Cricket Board would like to thank Stuart for his incredible dedication and contribution to English Cricket and we wish him well for the remainder of his final Test match and the future,” the press release read.
Broad announced the news of his retirement after Day 3's play. He remained not out for two runs as England posted 389/9 with a 377-run lead in the bag.
While coming out to bat on Day 4 of the final Test, Broad was given a standing ovation by the fans in the stadium as he walked out on the pitch with last man batting and long-time Test bowling partner James Anderson. Anderson let his pace compatriot take the lead but when they reached the boundary, Broad wanted to enter the field at the same time as Anderson.
The 37-year-old was greeted with a Guard of Honour from the Australian players as they stood on either side while Broad entered the field. He wanted to walk down the line with Anderson but the 41-year-old bowler let the Leicestershire-based batter have his moment in the sun before taking the field to join his compatriot.
Stuart Broad remained unbeaten on eight runs in eight balls, including one six to his name as England set a target of 395 runs for Australia to chase down.
Broad made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2007. He has taken a total of 815 international wickets so far. He has played 167 Tests, 121 ODIs and 56 T20Is registering 602, 178 and 65 scalps so far. Broad has done well as a lower-order batter as well. He has scored over 3,650 runs including one century and 13 half-centuries.
Broad's best Test bowling performance came at Trent Bridge in Ashes 2015 when he took eight wickets for just 15 runs. Broad also became the first bowler to get hit for six sixes in an over T20Is. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh achieved the feat in T20 World Cup 2007. However, three years later he was part of England's maiden T20 World Cup win. Also, he has been a part of four Ashes series wins.
The tall pacer also registered bowling figures of 5/5 against India at Trent Bridge in 2011. The economical fifer included the wickets of former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar.
