England fast bowler Stuart has announced his retirement from Test cricket during the ongoing fifth Test of Ashes 2023. The announcement came at the end of Day 3’s play at Kennington Oval, London.
Broad is among the only two pacers alongside teammates James Anderson to take 600 or more Test wickets. He is currently the fifth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket history.
“The England & Wales Cricket Board would like to thank Stuart for his incredible dedication and contribution to English Cricket and we wish him well for the remainder of his final Test match and the future,” the press release read.
Broad announced the news of his retirement after Day 3's play. He remained not out for two runs as England posted 389/9 with 377-run lead in the bag.
Broad who was not expected to play all five Tests in the series has been exceptional so far. He has taken 20 wickets in Ashes 2023 and haunted Australia opener David Warner. Recently, he also became the first England bowler to take 150 or wickets in Ashes history.
Broad made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2007. He has taken a total of 815 international wickets so far. He has played 167 Tests, 121 ODIs and 56 T20Is registering 602, 178 and 65 scalps so far. Broad has done well as a lower order batter as well. He has scored over 3,650 runs including one century and 13 half-centuries.
Broad's best Test bowling performance came at Trent Bridge in Ashes 2015 when he took eight wickets for just 15 runs. Broad also became the first bowler to get hit for six sixes in an over T20Is. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh achieved the feat in T20 World Cup 2007. However, three years later he was a part of England's maiden T20 World Cup win. Also, he has been a part of four Ashes series wins.
The tall pacer also registered bowling figures of 5/5 against India at Trent Bridge in 2011. The economical fifer included the wickets of former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar.
