Australia to deal with a fresh selection headache ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as their key batter Tim David picked up a hamstring injury while playing in a domestic T20 league.
David was hurt while batting for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. Considering his injury, he will likely to be out of action for a period leading into the mega event, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7.
Deadline to submit the squad to the ICC
The deadline to submit their 15-man squad to the ICC is coming up early next month, and the 2021 World Cup winners are now weighing their options. Despite the injury concern, selectors are expected to back David and name him in the squad, trusting that he will regain full fitness in time.
The powerful middle-order batter has been part of Australia’s campaigns at the last two T20 World Cups and recently showed his importance to the side with a brilliant 74 against India in Hobart.

Tim David's BBL and Australia teammate Nathan Ellis remains hopeful that David will be able to return to the Hurricanes for the backend of the Big Bash competition and prove his fitness before the start of the T20 World Cup.
"As a mate, first and foremost, I'm shattered he potentially might miss a few games for the Hurricanes," Ellis said.
"But I'm hopeful that we'll do all the right things and hopefully, potentially, get him right for the backend of the tournament ... and beyond with the Australian colours in the (T20) World Cup.
"He's a huge figure in the Australian cricket team, there's no secret there.
"He's been batting four and dominating, so fingers crossed it's not too bad, and we get him a few games in purple (Hurricanes colours) before then."
Australia T20 World Cup schedule
