Vaibhav Sooryavanshi yet again turned head, this time with his robust batting during India’s Under-19 World Cup 2026 clash against Bangladesh at the Queen Sports Club in Bulawayo on January 17. India took to the crease first and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wasted no time to establish his dominance, finding the boundary early in his innings to bag a landmark achievement in junior cricket.

By reaching just six runs in that fixture, Sooryavanshi officially surpassed Virat Kohli’s long-standing record for the most runs scored for India in Youth ODIs.

Most runs for India in Youth ODIs:

Vijay Zol - 1404 runs
Yashasvi Jaiswal - 1386 runs
Tanmay Srivastava - 1316 runs
Shubman Gill/Unmukt Chand - 1149 runs
Sarfaraz Khan - 1080 runs
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi - 979* runs
Virat Kohli - 978 runs

Sooryavanshi’s ascent in junior cricket is defined by staggering efficiency. He reached his latest landmark in just 19 innings, six fewer than the 25 innings it took Virat Kohli to reach the same milestone. By outpacing one of India’s modern legends in age-group statistics, Sooryavanshi has signaled that he is more than just a promising talent; he is a statistical outlier. With three centuries and four half-centuries already to his name, he is rapidly approaching the elite 1,000-run mark in Youth ODIs, a feat accomplished by only a select few in Indian history.

Talking about the match, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl, putting India’s top order under immediate pressure. The Indian side endured a shaky start, struggling to find their rhythm as they reached 25/2 within the first six overs. The early collapse saw captain Ayush Mhatre depart for just 6 runs, followed shortly by Vedant Trivedi, who was dismissed for a duck.

While wickets fell around him, Sooryavanshi remained a bright spot, appearing sharp and composed at the crease. He raced to 15 runs off just eight deliveries, a quickfire cameo highlighted by three crisp boundaries that momentarily shifted the momentum. However, he was sent back to the pavilion after scoring a 67-ball 72.
