Former India cricketer Anil Kumble highlighted that Shubman Gill has shown great maturity ever since taking over the captaincy in Test cricket. The 26-year-old was handed leadership duties before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England and ever since then, he has rapidly risen through the ranks. Gill has also become the Men in Blue's captain in ODIs and is Suryakumar Yadav's deputy when it comes to the shortest format. He hasn't only been brilliant as a leader, but has significantly improved when it comes to the batting department as well.
Kumble pointed out that leading India isn't an easy task at all, but Gill has done extremely well even though he hadn't led the side in Tests before this year. He further stated that Gill has shown great composure as the captain.
“Captaining India is never easy. It’s not just about on-field decisions but also handling several responsibilities off it, and Shubman has done exceptionally well. On the field, he’s been outstanding, and as a batter, he’s shown great composure since taking over the captaincy. Today, was no different,” Kumble said on JioHotstar.
“He read the situation perfectly, attacked the spinners when needed, and maintained the scoring rate. For a young captain, scoring runs is vital. It earns respect in the dressing room, strengthens leadership, and builds authority. Usually, experienced players inherit captaincy after years of establishing themselves, but for Shubman, to step up early and perform this well reflects great maturity and bodes well for India’s future,” he added.
Gill's stunning knock against West Indies
This statement comes after Gill had played a fine innings of 129* against West Indies in the second Test, massively helping India in posting a mammoth first-inning total of 518/4 on Day 2. The India captain had formed strong partnerships alongside the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel as the hosts continued their domination over the Windies with the bat.
In reply, the visitors lost opener John Campbell early, but the duo Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze steadied their ship with their 66-run partnership. However, Ravindra Jadeja helped India in finishing off the day strong as he dismissed Chanderpaul before sending Roston Chase back to the pavilion for a duck. Kuldeep Yadav also opened his wicket-account and dismissed Alick Athanaze as India managed to restrict the opposition to 140/4 by the end of day's play. It remains to be seen how things develop on Day 3.
