India completely dominated with the bat during the second day of the first Test against West Indies. The Men in Blue started the day on 121/2 with KL Rahul unbeaten on 53 and Shubman Gill batting on 18. The duo helped the hosts make a strong start to the day as they toiled against the West Indian bowlers during the opening session. They smacked several boundaries on the batter-friendly pitch at the Narendra Modi stadium and soon Gill also went on to reach his half-century. But he wasn't able to go any further and was dismissed for exactly 50 runs by Roston Chase.
On the other hand, Rahul continued his innings and eventually ended up reaching triple figures for the 11th time in red-ball cricket. This was the 33-year-old's first Test century on Indian soil since December 2016 when he had played an incredibly knock of 199 against England in Bengaluru. However, just like Gill, Rahul failed to take his innings any further and was sent back to the pavilion by Jomel Warrican for exactly 100 runs.
Jurel and Jadeja's heroic knocks
Though West Indies managed to get two big wickets, there was no relief in sight for their bowlers as the duo of Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja piled on runs during the second session. Both of them hit several boundaries and formed a huge partnership, taking the Men in Blue's total over the 400-run mark. Jurel eventually went on to score his maiden hundred in red-ball cricket during the third session. He reached the milestone after 190 deliveries, the same as Rahul and this will definitely be a knock that he will remember for a long time.
Jadeja continues stellar form
On the other hand, Jadeja also continued his sensational batting form in the longest format and went on to score his sixth century in the format. He reached the milestone after facing 168 deliveries, helping the hosts take a formidable lead over the visitors. The 36-year-old has certainly continued from where he left off in the England tour just months ago. Notably, he had scored a total of 516 runs in 10 innings during the five-match Test series and had contributed massively for his side with the bat.
The 206-run partnership between Jurel and Jadeja was eventually brought to an end by Khary Pierre, who dismissed the former for 125 runs. The second day came to an end with India on 448/5 and having taken a mammoth 286-run lead in the match. Jadeja will join Washington Sundar on the crease as the third day of the Test commences on Saturday.
