Scotland fail to make the cut to Women's T20 World 2028

The qualification roadmap for the Women's T20 World Cup 2028 has taken shape, with the top four teams from each group of the ongoing tournament automatically locking in their spots. From Group 1, Australia, India, South Africa, and Bangladesh have safely punched their tickets. They are joined by England, West Indies, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka from Group 2.

Despite a disappointing fifth-place finish and managing only a single victory in five games, Pakistan also secured direct qualification purely by virtue of being the tournament hosts.

Meanwhile, Scotland suffered heartbreak on June 26, missing out on a golden opportunity for automatic entry into the prestigious 12-team ICC event following a crucial defeat to Sri Lanka.

3 spots yet to be filled

The battle for the remaining slots will come down to global standings and qualifiers. The 10th position will be awarded to the highest-placed country on the T20I rankings table at the fast-approaching July 6, 2026 cut-off date, a spot currently occupied by 9th-ranked Ireland. The final two berths for the tournament will be contested through a highly competitive 10-team global qualifier, fed by various regional qualifying tournaments.

For lower-ranked nations, the pressure is mounting to secure a spot on the grand stage without enduring a grueling knockout format. The Netherlands, currently sitting at 14th in the world rankings, look destined for the global qualifiers. They could be joined by Scotland and Ireland—currently sitting 11th and 9th respectively—should either nation experience a dip in form and slide down the ranking tables before the cut-off.
