Gujarat Giants have named Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner as their captain for the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026. Gardner who was retained for Rs 3.5 crore ahead of the mega auction, will lead the side featuring the likes of Beth Mooney, Sophie Devine, Renuka Singh and others.

“OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. Experience in her stride. Belief in her voice. Ash Gardner steps up once more as our CAPTAIN, primed to take us to glory," the franchise wrote on X.

 

 

Gujarat Giants will begin their WPL 2026 campaign against UP Warriorz on January 10 at Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai.

Gujarat Giants in hunt of maiden title

Gardner has been a part of Gujarat Giants since the inaugural season. They finished at the bottom of the points table in 2023 and 2024 editions. In the previous season, they were knocked out by Mumbai Indians in the eliminator clash. MI won by 47 runs. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side went on to beat Delhi Capitals to win the trophy for the second time.

Gardner’s WPL numbers

Gardner has played 25 games for Gujarat Giants, scoring 567 runs at an average of 24.65 and strike rate of 141.75. She has five fifties for the franchise. For Gujarat Giants, she is the top run-scorer, just ahead of Mooney who has 522 runs from 18 innings.

In the bowling department, the off-spinner has taken 25 wickets for Gujarat Giants at an average of 27.20. He economy rate is on the higher side at 8.34 runs per over.
